Travel Info Moving to Calgary...what the best to live in are? My work is at 6th Avenue SW. Im 23 and want a young area? Travel Tips Kensignton, Crescent Heights, anywhere just off the train near to the university will have younger people around ie: bowness. Just get a map from mapquest.com and compare it to properties. A good site for house hunting is rentfaster.ca. Good Luck! Others Kensington, it's trendy and it's close to work. Another place that you can also try looking for (even though I doubt you might find any place cheap, if any at all), is over at 17th Ave SW. Lot's of pubs, clubs and partying in that area. It's also known as "Uptown", "Red Mile". You could also try the surrounding areas. But like the other person said, Kensington is also good. In the Summer, they have the Sun and Salsa festival there. All these inner city places are good if you can afford them. Rents have gone through the roof here. You have to consider what you need. Walk to work? Close to clubs? (17th Ave or Kensington/Sunnyside), Close to train lines (Macleod trail, Crowchild Trail or Whitehorn/Temple NE). Walking distance to Car Rental outlets... http://www.calgary-city-maps.com/calgary... If you need that. Has been a good idea to stay away from the Stampede Grounds area, although they are currently revitalizing that region. The north hill near 16th avenue is also okay. Places like Crescent Heights or Mt Pleasant for instance. The university is just west of there. Calgary has gotten pretty expensive, you might have to take what you can get! You're fortunate that 6th Ave SW is pretty central, anyways. Stick along the train line and you'll be alright. The last train running north goes around midnight, the last train going south is around 4am or so. We live around Chinook and it's VERY convenient to get downtown (I work on 7th Ave SW) on the bus in less than 15 minutes. I sure wouldn't want to drive! Good luck! Calgary's pretty small so travel's not an issue. Kensington is the most happening and young area and is a 10-15 minute walk to work, also try Sunnyside, it's right next door. Mission is similar to Kensington but not as busy and a little further from work, 24th Ave and 4th St SW. Bridgeland is supposed to be the new happening Kensington but I think it's still a work in progress. Around 17th Ave is a nice area also, very popular and trendy. You are going to find it's not as easy as you hope. Vacancy rates are really low. Best bets are to get a roommate, check the Calgary Herald for "roommate wanted" or "shared accomodation" or whatever they say. The other thing you can do is check the university and college to see if anyone is looking for a roommate. Rents are astronomical, so unless you are already independantly wealthy, you might need someone to help with rent, bills and like that. The other place I know of that might help you find places to rent is the Latter-Day Saint Institute of Religion, just off the U of C campus. I believe that they used to have a board with messages on it, including postings for roommate wanted. There are lots of "young" areas...around the U of C, around Mount Royal College, SAIT....Sunnyside/Hilldale, off Kensington Road is really young but really expensive. These areas also have pretty easy access to downtown...bu or C-train from Sunnyside and Uof C. Good luck and welcome to Calgary! |
