Where is the best suburb to live in Canberra, and why? |
Travel Info Where is the best suburb to live in Canberra, and why? Travel Tips Queanbeayan has been called "Struggle Town" and frankly the shopping is lousy except for your groceries and appliances. Actually there are quite OK areas of Queanbeyan. I was once told there were no "bad suburbs" in Canberra and that is probably still true. However there are areas to avoid and they are generally those close to big public housing places. Your best selection is one reasonably close to work, not down in a gully (cold) and of course away from public nuisances like the rare Harley Davidson and/or old Ford V8 fancier. Best to avoid places backing on to major roads. Since most older houses in C'berra have been built to a fairly high standard, there is little to be gained by going for the "new" suburbs. In fact you will lose a bit in convenience as the newer areas tend to be a bit remote from employment and they seem to have narrow streets which can be a nuisance. These tend to be "Nappy Valleys". How much money do you have to spend on a house? Neighbor here has just bought a larger house to suit a growing family and has to shell out $1.2 million. A small cottage will cost you at least $300,000. Most prices are between these limits. BTW, rents are high and rental places are scarce. The absolute best address in Canberra is Mugga Way in the suburb of Red Hill. You will be surrounded by senior diplomats, the top echelon of the Australian public service and the more wealthy of local business people. You might wait a few years to buy a house there though. Others None go to Queanbeyan instead Farrer is the best suburb in Canberra. Great location, great little suburban shopping centre with a new cafe and organic grocer. Quiet, top quality houses, good school, no Booners. Overall, the best suburb in Canberra. Big up for the Farrersite Massive Braddon; close to everything |
