What are the positive points about living in Canberra? |
Travel Info Lots of people point out the bad points about living in Canberra, BUT what are the good ones? Emigrating there in 3 weeks from UK and would love to hear from people in the area or people who have emigrated there Travel Tips I'm moving back to Canberra in a week (I've lived there for a few years before) and I quite like the city for a few reasons: It's not huge, overpopulated or high rise, so the lifestyle/working conditions aren't as cut throat or stressed as the bigger cities. The city is extremely well planned because it was designed and created pretty much just to be the capital of Australia, so it has lots of nice open spaces and suburban communities. Once you've figured out how to reference everything as north-side (of Lake Burley Griffen) or south side it is actually quite easy to get around (I recommend using Telsra Tower as a navigation tool also). The population on average is made up mostly of uni students and public servants so it is fairly young, so there is a reasonable amount of entertainment venues and events as well as some of the nations most historically significant museums and gallaries. If you're sporty then you will love canberra as many of the nations top athletes live and train here (and enter the local events). Canberra is approx. 3hrs from Sydney, several lovely beaches, and the snow fields and 10hrs from Melbourne by car or much less by plane, and many of the locals (who you are likely to become friends with :o) travel to these places often because they are so convenient to get to. I hope you enjoy yourself, ultimately I think that a place it what you make of it, if people found Canberra boring it was most likely because they were boring people. Good Luck! Others It's in Australia (a VERY good country) it's a capital it's beautiful There are lots of politicians there. Is that good though?? My friend lived there for a yr for work and counted the days to come home. She often refers to Canberra as 'the hole" You can buy fireworks, that's about it. OK, as someone who grew up in Canberra and couldn't wait to leave, I can still think of a few positives to Australia's capital! If you enjoy outdoor pursuits such as bushwalking, rowing, cycling, Canberra is great (except perhaps in the depths of winter). The air is clean and crisp. Winter is freezing. Autumn is very pretty. Summer is hot with lots of flies. Spring is lovely (be sure to visit Floriade in Commonwealth Park), but beware of the magpies! There is the National Gallery, High Court, War Memorial, and a new museum which is supposedly fantastic. There isn't much traffic. It's within a couple of hours' drive of the Snowy Mountains, and the south coast where there are beautiful beaches. That's about all I can think of. Many people really can't stand Canberra and think it's the most boring place on the planet, but then again, I have many friends who love it. I guess each to their own. Good luck and enjoy!! umm..its very prettyfull in lots of places, there is snow nearby, and yeah, its a nice place to live. |
