Best way to move from Brisbane to Canberra?

Travel Info
My family is moving from Brisbane to Canberra in June. There are 2 adults and 2 kids under 5. We do not actually live in Brisbane but will be staying there for 1 week before we move as our small town has no transport down there. Our furniture will be in storage or sold as we have had bad experiences with removalists in the past, so we only have to worry about ourselves. Should we drive and sight see along the way, take a plane or bus- we were considering buying a new car before the move down in Canberra. I want to drive and have a short holiday but fear my kids may be too restless. The plane is easy but the bus is cheaper?? Also my husband has never been on a public bus his whole life- he is 26, and I haven't been on one in 7 years. Anyone made the move before? Done it with kids? Any suggestions would be great.

Travel Tips
if you're worried about kids being restless don't catch a bus, kids go nuts on buses. plus there isn't much leg room and you can't stop whenever you want.

plane would be the fastest way to get there but a sightseeing car adventure is a good idea, be sure to stop at places kid's will enjoy and make sure they have a ton of stuff to do in the car whilst driving

We moved from Brisbane to Melbourne (for work) and back again with small kids. Our children were fine in the car and we did just as you suggested. We made a sight-seeing holiday out of both trips. We were able to stop and stretch our legs etc whenever we wanted. We took 4 days each way.
If you were travelling just by yourselves without children, the car is a good way of doing it, or if you make plenty of stops, it can be bearable.

Flying is always going to be a great option, as it's quick and easy.

You can also go by train via Sydney, an interesting option, maybe something different for the kids. Be warned though, the trip is long and does require a stop of a few hours in Sydney.

Express coach services also operate via Sydney, there are no direct services from Brisbane.

Don't.
Hello Alias, have driven Qld - Canberra and return many times though not with little kids. If you think your car will make it that may be the way to go. If you travel inland you can stay o'nite in say Goondiwindi or Moree then in Dubbo and take the kids to the zoo the next day.

Buses are OK for adults but they are terribly cramped and you will be on the bus for hours with no way to stop, which is something you can do almost anytime with the car. There is also the train to Sydney, which will be a lot less cramped than a bus. Don't economise in a sitting car, you will regret it.

Flying is also cramped but you are on it for a lot less time. You might be surprised how cheap fares are Brisbane - Canberra. Change planes in Sydney is the usual thing, but not always.
yeah we use to travel with 2 parents 6-7 kids from townsville to adelaide in a car, and you think you have problems with two kids. besides they will sleep most of the way, travel makes you tired. I would drive and you could either take the coast road or the back road both ways are great scenaries. I wouldnt take a bus - cause when and if your kids do play up you would get embarrassed now and you wont be able to discpline them in front of everybody esp. if they make a scene. You could fly the fastest way to get there but you dont get to see things on the way. If you drive you can have breaks when you want where you want to let your kids out and be wild then they fall asleep. mmmm sounds good.
