What can I do, wear, live in Canberra? |
Travel Info I am moving to Canberra soon and would like to know what it is like. I am a 25 year old single female. I am a social worker, in community services. I love music- every type, art, music festivals and wildlife & parks. I would like suggestions on where to go out to hear bands, eat, gallerys, festivals, parks, e.t.c..... I am staying at a hotel until I find work & am undecided on where to live. I have looked up allhomes but it doesn't provide much info on suburbs. What are good suburbs? Also what do people wear there? I have heard it is very conservative & am unsure if my style will scare people? Where can I meet people & what are they like? I know alot of people say it is a hole, but I am already living in one & am looking forwrd to a change. any advice will help! Travel Tips Your interests will fit in well with the mixed population of Canberra (from the "conservative" government/public service type to the "fringe" culture) There are always festivals and wildlife stuff all over the place. Although some of these you have to travel a little out of Canberra into the surrounding area. People in Canberra wear what other people are wearing in Australia. Be mindful of extreme weather. It can get quite cold here in the ACT. In winter the night can go down to -5 celsius or more and if we get any wind it will freeze you to the bone. But summer is hot and at night it can get really balmy. There are plenty of places to go out to eat (relative to its small city status). Lot of side walk caf茅s everywhere. Good suburbs? depends on what you mean by good? Up market or trendy or safe or quiet? try: http://www.act.gov.au/ http://www.canberraconnect.act.gov.au... Hope this helps Others As to where to live, the upmarket suburbs are Deakin, Yarralumla, Red Hill. Avoid Kambah and Charnwood; these are poorer areas. Around Woden is the best area to live (eg. Chifley, Pearce, Curtain, Garran) but rents will reflect this. Near the city is good also, but really just choose where you like, Canberra is quite small so you can drive to work quickly no matter where you live. Once you are in Canberra, pick up a BMA mag from a Stocks store, this will tell you all the happening bands going on. The National Gallery is the best I have ever been to but there are others too, and the best place to eat is just manuka or dickson and choose (about 30+ restaurants) and then later discover good suburban ones. There are lots of public servants here but lots of uni students too so you will fit in no matter what you wear. Oh and nightclubs are all free entry on fri nights! yay! Dont stress too much about clothing, the population is varied, students, public servants and politicians just to name a few, whatever you wear you will fit in. As for weather, Canberra is one of the few places that has four definate seasons each year, so keep that in mind when you are deciding waht to bring clothing-wise. As for places to live, while Woden is a good place to live, so is Belconnen, especially Emu Ridge and down by Lake Ginninderra, its good that you are looking on the net already to find places, as rentals are a little scarce at the moment. As for Canberra being a hole, I think it is what you make it, if you sit at home complaining about how boring it is then you will DEFINATELY think its a hole, so get out and about, meet people and try some of the great restaurants we have here. IM me if you like when you get here and, I'll shout you a beer at King O'Malleys! |
