What's a good hotel to go in Cancun?

I'm not sure the geography of Cancun. can i take any hotel in cancun and still be close to all the main attractions or are the hotels to avoid ( too far from the main fun or for its bad reputation or safety) ?
Can you give me the name(s) of good hotels that are good and not too expensive?

Cancun's hotel zone is like a very long single road, with a U shape that ends in Cancun village. I remember that the best hotels,and most expensive, were at the beginning of this road (starting from the airport), so they are a bit far from the main attractions. Anyway, you can take any bus along this single road, so you will always end at the same place. The main attractions are close to the "U" turn, so I would pick a hotel close to there, so I could walk at night. Sometimes is so hot during the day that is impossible to go walking through this long road.

but u should stay in playa del carmen, go to the mosquito blue, or hotel basico..
Park Royal nice hotel across is shopping mall Plaza La Isla. It is real easy to get around, Taxis are inexpensive and it is as safe as any American City believe me. They realize tourists are their support. Xcaret is far so you need to take a tour.. D Swim withthe Dolphins right across from Park Royal Hotel.

There is a chain of al l inclusive hotels called Riu Palace. 2 are in Cancun and one is in Playa del Carmen. The Palace (where we were) is beautiful and with your wristband you can hang out at all of them and even eat for free at any of them. So you get to enjoy 3 luxury hotels but you can only sleep at yours
