I have been there many times. In hotel area there is nothing to worry about. I have been downtown a lot. If you do go downtown do not go alone and stay in the more popular areas. There is a restaurant downtown that is great if you like seafood call El Pescodor.
I recommend getting this map for anyone that goes to Cancun.

I live in Cancun. The majority of the areas are safe to wonder. Now, certain parts of downtown you should stay out of. You'll know which parts. Please no dark roads. Stick to where there are a lot of people and or tourist.
Yeah the swamps they are fool of Alligators.
