Should I bring spending money in traveler's checks to Mexico? |
Travel Info Everything is paid so I will need spending money and 1's for tipping. Travel Tips I brought some a few years ago, and it was hard to find a place that would cash them outside of Mexico City. I didn't bring a passport that year, and it was even harder to cash them. I brought my ATM card and most of the machines there took them. Just be careful, because a small number of outdoor ATM's a few years ago had "skimmers". They would capture your info but not give you money. Then the person who set up the skimmers would clean out your account. Your withdrawal amount and balance will be in pesos, so it will appear that your bank balance is about 10 times higher than it really is. Others No, it is not necessary to take travers checks. It actually maybe difficult to find someplace to cash them. Just take small bills and you will be fine. Most places I have traveled to, there was no problem taking american currency. Only as a backup - bad exchange rate and not always easy to change. Uses your ATM to get pesos after notifying your bank you will be visiting Mexico. Bring cash and change to pesos at a 'casa de cambio' at the airport http://sparks-mexico.com/ Bring you ATM card and take money out as needed. Just remember, you need a 4 digit code for Mexician ATM's and you get pesos not dollars. Do a mix, cash, ATM and TC and you will be set since you are staying at a Al. I'm sure your hotel will cash your TC. Have a great trip. I never do, it is safe but you do get a higher exchange rate. I just get money from the bank or machines. =) If you plan to party I would bring about 500.00 with you. In american money. If you decide to do trips you will need money. The travelers checks were somewhat hard to cash and get the right amount of money. I just came back in february and I took 700.00 for my husband and I. |
