Anyone have tips for renting a car in Cancun to drive to resort in Riveria Maya? |
Travel Info I am staying at Hotel El Cid, in the Riveria Maya and want to have a car there. I have heard that it can even be cheaper to rent a car than pay for airport shuttles. Anyone have tips on where to rent, and whether its better to do online before, or wait til i get there. Travel Tips My honest opinion is: don't rent a car unless you've travelled the area before and become somewhat familiar with the area. I take the bus from Downtown Cancun when I travel to the Riveria........ The roads are not well marked, are not lit at night (even the tollroad) and the toll alone will almost double your car rental cost. (literally $20 each way). A better option would be to use Entertainment Plus or your resort travel agency and do a private van tour. The private tour will leave when you want, see what you want and return when you want. We've rented cars for years and driven without any problems but we'd also travelled the area for years before renting. If you do decide to rent and go on your own be sure to ask your travel agency or rental company for very detailed maps on the area. They have decent maps available. =) Others Good question as I will be going to Desire Resort in July. Sorry I can't help with the answer but will be looking to see what others have to say. We rented from Dollar Rent A Car at the Cancun airport. They were great, upgraded our car went they were out of the category we booked at no extra cost. Also, the price they quoted us was the price we were charged when we returned the car, they didn't try to slip in any extra "taxes" or fees. I'm not 100% sure but I think we booked it through travelocity. I know we booked it in advance online. I believe the rental was about $170 for the week - If I find my bill I'll come back and update this. Edit: (Prices in Pesos) 1 week $1,508.00 Airport Fee $150.80 IVA $165.88 Total $1824.68 At the time that translated to just under $170 USD. The car was brand new - very clean (obviously). We were very happy with this car rental. They worked out the price in pesos to match what I was quoted online in USD. I've heard that some places will take your online quote, agree to it and then charge you what they want to in pesos. If you're not up on the bank rates you're not going to know until you get home and the credit card bill comes in. I've heard this but it's never happened to me. I just mention it because it may be something that you want to watch out for. a good transportation site to check out. Very reliable. http://www.entertainment-plus.net... Whatever you decide, reserve before you get to Cancun. Weather it's a car or shuttle. Good Luck |
