I'd go to Playa del Carmen/Riviera Maya. It's less of a party atmosphere than Cancun, and you still have access to most activities.

For our "Honeymoon" spot my bride and I first stayed at Mayaland Resort at Chichen Itza. This is a real romantic location in the Yucatan Jungle at the Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza. The resort has a couple of restaurants and great bars. The accommodations are bungalows on the resort grounds.
You'll have to rent a car and drive for about two hours on the toll road, however, it's well worth it. After a couple of days travel back to the Mayan Riviera at Playa del Carmen you will have to search out an adults only resort or stay at the Club Med resort in Cancun , I think this might be adults only. There are a few out of the way places south of Tulum that have rentals that might work.

I went to Cancun for mine too, stayed at Riu Las Americas. It was great, but there were a few kids, but really no bother. My friend went to Isla Mujeres for hers, she loved it too.
