What is the best (safest) way to get around Cancun?

Travel Info
I am staying at The Moon Palace which is 10 minutes south of the Airport, but I have heard a lot of bad things about cab drivers kidnapping tourists. Please let me know your thoughts.

Travel Tips
Check out a travel guide from your local library. It will tell you about cabs in the Cancun area. (In Mexico City it's either the green taxis are good or the green ones are dangerous -- I can't remember.) Also, check with your hotel and get their recommendations. Mexico also has "Tourist Police". These police wear brown uniforms and are there specifically to assist travelers. Ask one of them for help abuot selecting a taxi. PS the Spanish for cab is "taxi".
Others
Moon Palace is a beautiful place however it is quiet a distance from the Hotel Zone and the city of Cancun.

The Palace resorts offer "gratis" bus transportation to their other properties in the hotel zone. I suggest that you take advantage of the free ride otherwise you'll be paying a $30.00 one-way taxi bill.

I haven't heard of taxis in Cancun "kidnapping" anyone...the police are protective of the tourist population. Don't get me wrong Cancun has it's evil side too but all in all it is a safe place to be.

I feel so safe I've moved to Cancun from the Southern US full time.

Hope you have a safe and happy trip.
We used the buses in Cancun and were happy with them. They can get busy at certain times of the day. Keep in mind this is the transportation the locals use so it is busy when they are going to and from work. When you are leaving the airport you WILL be approached by time share sellers. They will lie to get you to go with them. They will dress like the airport security and staff. They will tell you they are from your travel agency. They can be aggressive. We had one grab our suitcase handle. I just jerked it back and he walked away. We used a hotel shuttle from a company called "Best Day" and highly recommend them. We also booked tours and stuff through them. I can't tell you how many people told us they were from best day. You just have to shove through the crowd and DO NOT get into any vehicle that does not have the name of the company you are dealing with on it. If you take a taxi, find one yourself. Don't get into one from someone that approaches you. I can't believe they don't have a law against it. They won't hurt you but they will take you and try to sell you time shares. They'll probably keep you all day too.
i'm from california and visited Cancun for the first time in April. i used the bus for the majority of my transportation - it was inexpensive, safe, and reliable. i even took it back to the hotel after a night of clubbing...around 2 am. but do know what the exchange rate is b/c the bus drivers may try to rip you off if you're not an informed consumer! have fun!
