Others We went there last year. It was awesome. Some time of year there is a big event when the pyramid casts a shadow that looks like a snake. I think they let people climb up it certain times of the year too. It was roped off when I was there. :-( The best time to visit is during the spring and fall equinox, when the shadow cast by the side of El Castillo (the pyramid) looks like a serpent. Since it is often cloudy during the fall equinox, the spring equinox is the best, and thus the most popular time to visit Chichen Itza. Spring and fall equinox if you don't mind crowds and seeing the shadow of a snake go down the pyramid. Otherwise, late fall. Not too hot, less crowds. Do you mean time of year or time of day? Personally, I would avoid the equinox as other people have advised - it totally packed on those two days (spring/fall). Almost anytime of year is hot, winter will be less hot. For time of day - I'd say early morning for two reasons, the tour buses from Cancun haven't arrived yet and it's the coolest part of the day. Either way, it's worth seeing at any time. Don't let the heat scare you. There is shady areas and you can buy drinks at the entrance and at a small snack bar by the cenote in the ruins. Totally worth it, even if you sweat through your shirt. Also, due to the number of visitor you can no longer climb many of the ruins, take some binoculars to help you view the tops of the closed ruins. when i went last year we went at the end of june before people come for summer vacation. I don't think i saw one person in the park pretty much the whole day. And then it's amazing to stay at night to see the light show. They tell you a whole story in spanish as the different ruins are lit with colorful lights. |
