I am going to Cancun in August and would like to know a few things.? |
Travel Info What would be the best way to purchase tour tickets? I really wanna see the ruins and have found many websites offering pretty much the same tour for very different prices. Is it safe to pre purchase tours? Would it be wiser to wait til I am in Cancun and purchase the tours from my hotel? Also I am thinking on renting a car since my hotel is 20 miles from the airport and the hotel will charge to have us picked up. Should i pre pay for the rental car through the internet? Will this save time?Money? I am also wondering about the whole credit card deal. Everything I have come across says to use your credit card not a debit card while in Cancun. I do not have a credit card only a debit. Should I look into getting a credit card for this trip? I really would rather not. Please advise. ThankYou! Travel Tips I have found that the Chichen-itza tour is best when you take it all inclusive (long drive) let the bus do the driving. Everywhere else I suggest you drive yourself. Most of the tours money is made in the transportation end, if there are more than two of you going on the trip you can save money by renting a car and purchasing tickets once you arrive at the different sites. Try www.playatrips.com, the operator is named Tello and he is a great contact while in the Yucatan. (Either way you can wait or buy in advance, Tello will let you pay him in cash, just contact him.) You say you are staying 20 min. away from the airport, so if you are staying outside of Cancun a rental car may not be such a bad idea. Yes, pre pay for the car and you will not need to hassle with the guys there. As far as a credit card you may want to pick up a Green American Express use it like a cash card. (The only fee is the membership fee, once a year.) The advantage is everytime you rent a car with American Express they automatically put insurance on the car, so you can decline the insurance at the rental place. This will save you money! It may pay for itself depending how long your are there. Plus you pay the entire bill at the end of your trip and no intrest. American Express will also go to bat for you at your hotel, (if you pay by AmEx) just call them if you have any problems. It's kinda like having an influencial friend on the trip with you. The main road that leads out of Cancun runs south and that is where you will find many of the Hotels, 20mil. Porto Morales, 40mil. Playa Del Carmen and further south Akmul and Tulum. All can be easily driven to. Xcaret is about 5 miles south of Playa del Carmen (Xcaret.com) eco-park. Xel-Ha (eco-park)and Tulum are close and you can make a day trip to see both. In August it will be hot so go to Tulum in the morning and then vist Xel-Ha. (Xel-Ha.com) (Nice snorkling) Each city is a bit different Cancun has a lot of Club atmosphere and Playa is more laid back bar atmosphere. I am more of a Playa fan. My wife and I will be there in late Aug. ourselves. Great scuba diving in Playa and Cozumel of course. Snorkeling as well. Playa has a ferry to Cozumel, it is $20 round trip per person. About a 45 min boat ride. Kinda nice and you can say you went to Cozumel. (real laid back mostly scuba divers) Check out www.cancunmap.com and order a map of the Riviera Maya, it is $8.00 and worth it. P.S. Take plenty of small bills, they always give you pesos in change. Others The only reason why I'd encourage getting a Credit Card would be that even in the US its hard to get a rental without one. Do you just want a car to drive back to the hotel or do you plan on driving it to places as well? If you dont, then look into a Transfer Service that will provide a more cost effective transportation to your hotel. I don't know who you booked with, but a lot of travel agencies and hotels offer discounted deals to certain attractions. I haven't seen the ruins, so I can't say anything about that. But that might be a good place to start! Hi i am a travel agent and i can help you out. please email for more details.Thanks. quincy@dynamicdestinationsinc.... |
