Are police in Mexico really that corrupt? |
Travel Info I am going to Playa del Carmen in a couple months. I have heard all kinds of horror stories about the cops down there. I have a friend who claims he was walking down the street in Cancun, and he was simply "taken" by the cops to a Mexican jail. They didn't charge him with anything, just made him pay them $200 to get out. Anyone else have a horror story? Travel Tips Yes, they are. The majority are thieves in disguise. They tried to take my car in Tijuana for doing absolutely nothing and my girlfriend had legal prescription drugs which the cops tried to charge us as transporting illegal drugs and that it was a felony. I would be in prison "long time" they wanted 200 bucks from me as well. I have no idea what happened but they let me go with no bribe. But there is one good event I had with Tijuana police. I went to a strip club where a bartended stole my 50 dollars. I flagged a cop on the street and they went after them. He got me 200 bucks and a ride to the border! So I guess you can't judge all of them. Just don't take your car over there and don't be flashy.Si, Yes, Oui, and any other way to say yes. No offence, but Amoricans behave really really badly down here. I don't know why, but they seem to leave their morals at the border. So, your friend who was "taken" more than likely was stumbling around with open liquor or something. AND, he then made a scene on the street while being questioned, so they had to take him in. Nonetheless, Yes, there is a bribe system...if they see you doing something that warrants a minor infraction....me, I went through a yellow/red light recently...I was pulled over and I had to hand over 500 pesos $50US so I could go on my way. Typical. If you look like a gringo, then some of the police will take advantage. All I have to say is behave yourself, you aren't in American anymore Toto! |
