Keep in touch in Cancun?

Me and some friends will be traveling down into cancun and are thinking about picking up some phones on prepaid so when we split up we can call eachother and dont have to worry about those crazy roaming charges but i see the phones cost quite a bit on prepaid, and other ideas one way we can keep in contact without paying lots. if it helps we are traveling from canada.

Actually, buying a cellphone here (cheapest, about $35 US) and then the up-cards (from $100 pesos to whatever) would be the best... but!!! the cellphones do not work in the jungle or the ocean. So if the group on a tour is in the jungle, unless you climb a high pyramid, there will be no calling anyone.
Imagine you are on vacation and that cell phones do not exist.
It is very safe (unless you are part of the canadian druglords), or consider getting 2 phones, you can always send the instant messages, and those are a peso each.

Roaming charges are very expensive.

hello , LEt me help you as much as I can. I been trying to get some info over the internet on going to Cancun. I believe I will be going in February. Well, I think you can buy a Phone card in the Hotel room. Or go to convience store. Either way its going to be a bit expensive. unless you want to by like nextel radios ??? i dont know but its best if you make the investment.
If you aren't too bothered about the expensive you could always buy a cellphone here and then use the top up cards. The cheapest cellphone here would be around $50usd and then you can buy $10 or $20usd top up cards.
The phone would be pretty redundant when you leave though.
