When traveling to cancun, must i change my currency? |
Travel Info or since it's such a tourist [y] area they take US dollars? Travel Tips We have always found that the best deals are offered when paying cash in Mexican Pesos. You can obtain pesos quite easily by exchanging your currency at your Hotel's front desk or by using an ATM. One word of advice before using ATMs, do check with your bank before you leave home what the fees would be for using your ATM card internationally. If using/bring credit cards call you company and tell them the dates you will be in Mexico for so no one, including you, can make a charge to that card after the date you tell them from Mexico. Odds are hotels are not a great place to exchange unless they are a US chain hotel. Best place is the banks of which there are several in the hotel zone and or ATM锟斤拷锟絪. Restaurants and stores do not give you a very good rate so exchange money before shopping. EVERYONE here wins when it comes to exchanging money so just check the rates. The closer you get to downtown the better the rates are for you. You can not use ripped bills or if they have been written on or taped back together. Traveler checks must be signed not only on the front but odds are on the back with ID and a drop of blood. NO personal checks or money orders. No coins (hard to ship back to exchange). =) Others No not really...but it is good to have some of their coins for the bus. When I went there a couple of years ago they had a hard time to break a dollar. But make sure you know the currency rate exchange so you don't get ripped off when you do want to buy something with american money. If you change them in an exchange house you probably get a better rate, about 10.30 or 10.50 per dollar. But anywhere else they will accept it at around 10 pesos per dollar. They will very probably not give you change in dollars and no american coins or broken bills will be accepted (banks and exchange houses do not take them). The currency is Pesos, but most people in order to stay in bussiness accept dollars or euros. Hope this helps. If you purchase something with currency other than pesos you may not receive the best exchange rate. You are usually given 10 pesos to the dollar and the exchange rate at at bank is higher than that. Walmart usually gives the exact rate that a bank would on your purchases they do not change currency. So you pay with dollars and receive the good rate and you receive pesos as change but at the higher rate. Enjoy your vacation! Live in Cancun. thet take us dollars You'll want coins for the bus, but all the vendors take American dollars. They only give you change in Mexican currency, so you'll want small bills so that you don't lose out there. |
