Travel Tips
It depends on how many days you will be in Chennai and what will amuse you. I shall just provide some general info as some one who was born and brought up in chennai.

Chennai now a days seem to have some amusement places following western style. They may not be so perfect. ( Chennai as it is doesnt have much infrastructure facilities, But it still is a nice place.) In my opinion it would be far nicer to see the culture of chennai.

January beginning will be classical music season in Chennai. I am unsure though if there will be any performances in the morning. I do not live in India now so I do not know exact details. You can check it in newspapers when you are there. Everyday they do publish the programs for that day.

January also comes with a colourful festival Pongal, the biggest festival for people in Chennai. It is an harvest festival celebrated for 5 days from 13 January and will be very nice to see.

Besides this you can visit Marina beach. It would be nice when you go there for sunrise. You can also visit Ashtalakshmi temple and the Eliots beach by it.

There are many temples in Chennai which are nice to see, if you like to see. Karpagambal temple in Mylapore, Vaishnavi temple in Ambattur are quite calm and nice.

For shopping you can go to Mountroad, (Spencers plaza, Khadikraft, Poombuhaar), Pondy Bazaar- T.Nagar ( a busy place, if u bargain things are reasonably priced) Purasaiwakkam ( for dresses). There are also many other places for buying handicrafts, they are usually advertised in the news papers.

If you have time you can visit Mamallapuram and also Aurobindo Ashram in Pondychery.

Kishkinta is an amusement park near Chennai.

Just take care of what you eat when you are there. Drink only mineral water and avoid roadside restaurants.

Wish you a nice trip.

i agree with sr . but be careful of the cab drivers and auto drivers. they will rip u off all your money. stay in a good known hotel . and please please inform your local contact as well as the embassy. many men are sex starved, and always carry protective gear with you. most impt dress fully covered to avoid attention.

India is an amazing country, filled with both chaos and calm, often side-by-side. We met some wonderful people and, of course, the advice, information and support given to us by fellow bloggers Mridula and Emma was incredibly valuable. I hope I can repay the favor some day. I never got tired of seeing monkeys, elephants and camels, and actually missed the camels after we went south. I was charmed by the fruit and vegetable markets with their narrow paths, sacks of grains and artfully arranged stacks of produce. I loved the color everywhere; nearly every surface was lavishly decorated and even houses in the country became handpainted billboards advertising everything you can imagine.

India is far more rural that I ever would have thought. The cities don't sprawl endlessly, they just end. I saw so many things I wanted to take pictures of that we'd still only be a few miles from Delhi if I'd had the driver stop every time I wanted to. I took as many pictures as I could from the car, but most of them will have to live in my memory. So many things there were so foreign to us, but looking around, we saw similarities. The teenage Tibetan monks snapping each other with their scarves could have been teenage American boys with towels.

There's not much I'd change about the trip, other than spending more time in certain places. I can understand why people go for months at a time. We're already talking about our next trip to India. It may take years, but I'm sure we'll be back
