But we can use such opportunities to have get together Chennai celebrates its founder's day Chennai, Aug 23. (UNI): The people of Chennai on Tuesday celebrated the 368th anniversary of the founding of their city. This feeling of what can perhaps be called 'Chennainess' is relatively new, for it is only for a few years now that there has been this intense effort by a small group of people to kindle 'Chennai consciousness.' For, even a couple of decades ago, this large-hearted city held in its fold many a different type of culture, staying less parochial than many of its counterparts in India. This broadmindedness has stayed, but there is a fresh feeling that Chennai is unique, that one should be proud to be a Chennaiite, that one should be aware of its history and culture and work as much as possible to see that it retains its essence. For a brief jump back in time before swinging back to the present, August 22 has been deemed to be Chennai Day because it was on August 22, 367 years ago, that Francis Day, Andrew Cogan and Beri Thimmappa of the East India Company acquired a strip of land for the East India Company. On this land was built Fort St George. The city known as Chennai today slowly developed around it. Called Madras till 1986, the name of the metropolis was changed to Chennai in 1986. The celebrations, spread over a week, are essentially about trying to define what Chennai is - whether the hoary spires of Fort St George, Santhome Cathedral or Kapaleeswarar Koil; the coffee and Carnatic music culture or the cool Kanjeevaram cottons embellished by the fragrance of jasmine flowers. It is an attempt to tell the people that this city is old enough to have a history of its own and young enough to have ethos that are evolving everyday. If all this has become possible, it is because a group of people who were dead serious about wakening the consciousness of the people came together and set about the task. They included historians, journalists, architects, conservationists, environmentalists et al. Madras Day, or if we insist, Chennai Day, one can arguably say, evolved from the sensitisation of the people to Madras' oldest area, Mylapore. A neighbourhood newspaper assisted by staunch Mylaporeans and well meaning philanthropists started a movement to highlight all that is truly Mylapore - its tradition of intellectuals, lawyers and musicians, its ancient places of worship and today, its crowded roads and dirty bylanes. They organised publication of articles, 'walks' of landmarks, screenings of old films and finally an annual 'Mylapore Festival.' http://www.hinduonnet.com/holnus/0042006... It is a good idea to celebrate the spirit of this sprawling city. It is good to remember its history and role.Vaazhga Chennai! |
