Cook County Hospital...quality hospital?? |
Travel Info chicagoans please give me the skinny Travel Tips Coming from someone who's family had jobs there for nearly 3 decades and knew the head of medicine there back in the 60s 70s and 80s it's a world renown training hospital for new doctors and nurses, but as some other poster said it's a public hospital where many who don't have health insurance end up. I had to go there to be treated for a broken thumb because I had no insurance at the time and my mother was getting welfare after she was divorced so it's the best you will get if you're not one with money to pay for places like Northwestern University Medical, Mount Sinai (the worst hospital in Chicago) or other private hospitals. Others It's not called cook county anymore It's Stroger hospital. It's where everyone without insurance ends up. So it may not be anyone's first choice. In a word NO. It is a public hospital. The only people who go there are the ones who do not have the option of going somewhere else. On the other hand, I have heard (sorry, I cannot cite stats) that it is a good hospital for gunshot victims. Doctors and nurses in upscale suburbs have only read about gunshot wounds in textbooks. If you're without insurance, it's the place to go. It's also the place to go if you do have insurance and are shot - the place is all too familiar with trauma. But if you have insurance, you don't want to go to County (now called "Stroger Hospital," by the way), mainly due to the crush of people and chaos there. |
