It depends...

...but 20min. is just impossible with all the stops. I live in RP and have taken the el downtown for years.

I'd say 45min is an optimistic average anytime around rush hours. Maybe a bit faster in non-rush, but even then I notice trains run a bit slower, and there are fewer of them, so you'll be waiting longer.

Note that Metra commuter rail is an option too here, too. The stop is at Greenleaf/Lunt just west of Clark. Gets you to Ogilvie station in west loop in 20min. Source(s): www.metrarail.com

If you take the Red Line from Howard Street to downtown about 20 mins, but if you are on the Evanston Express you'll get there much faster.
