Places to live near Chicago?

Travel Info
What are affordable, safe areas to live near Chicago (I'm assuming that Chicago is too expensive for me, I'm a teacher)? Also, are people friendly there?

Travel Tips
Lots off great suburbs, although the northwest side of the city itself is pretty safe.

Affordable suburbs.....Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Wheeling....all northwest of the city and have public transportation to city bia Metra train. Also, Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates area.

I grew up in Des Plaines, and still live northwest of the city, in Wauconda.

My boyfriend lives in the western suburbs - around Lisle and Naperville. That whole area is really nice, safe and you are near the Metra commuter train - which goes straight into downtown Chicago.

Check out the Seven Bridges Development in Woodridge- they have beautiful brand new condo's, houses and apartments (it's next to a pond and a gold course, and there is a little "town" area with stores and shops within walking distance). The people and the local businesses are really nice. My boyfriend just moved there and he loves it.

I'm from DC though - and the only problem is that sometimes the area can seem a bit too perfect/ plesantville-ish. But that's me - I'm used to the gritty downtown atmosphere.
I lived in La Grange for 8 years and thought it was a great place to live - still do
The Metra stops there and both airports are less than 30 minutes away [ depending on traffic]
slightly west is Downers Grove not as good as la grange but still really nice.
Matteson is also a good place. Since it's a newly developed area, home ownership is a great investment and your home value will raise in a short time. Ex: my friend bought a piece of land about a year ago for 45K - that land is now worth 125K.
Don't forget that the Chicago is hosting the Olympics and that would increase the land value.
Chicagoland is big...over 180 suburbs.

Tell me where you will be working and I can tell you lots more.

Additional details like: acceptable commute, your definition of affordable, rent or own, etc. would be helpful.
Live in Chi area for 27 years.
Before you rule out the city, do a little investigation on rents rather than just assuming they're out of your reach. Lots of teachers live in Chicago, from beginning teachers to longtime veteran teachers. You don't say whether you're going to be working in the city or not. If you are, it would be to your advantage to actually live there, rather than having to commuter at 4 a.m. every morning or something. Check the Chicago reader website (www.chicagoreader.com) and look at their apartment listing. You might be surprised. I've seen noce one-bedrooms in decent neighborhoods for as cheap as $600 a month.
