Is it insane to vacation in Chicago mid-January? |
Travel Info Is it insane to vacation in Chicago mid-January? Travel Tips If you love sub-zero temperatures, are a non-smoker, no you are not insane. The prices at hotels tend to drop. There are Wonderful Museums, The Civic Opera House and plenty of jazz and Blues clubs. How about seeing the Oprah Wingrey Show or Jerry Springer live, a Bull's game or Blackhawks for hockey? There are the restaurants to visit like The New Chinatown, Gino's East, Ed Debevick's Hamburgers..the upscale Magic Mile and Northside. Take your boots, insulated clothes, make sure to layer your clothing and have warm gloves, scarf and hat. They don't call it the Windy City for nothing. Others Insane? No! No! I don't think so! One of the best vacations my wife & I ever had was when we went to Scotland in February --even farther north than Chicago, I think-- It was great -- we had the highways & a lot of other places to ourselves, without having to compete with other tourists -- I think Chi in Jan-- or any such place & time-- would make a lot of sense! --- You'd get to see a lot of things other people don't, ..... The question is, do you want an adventure? I've been in Chicago in mid-January and had a great time! Just really cold! no not insane at all. You will get to see things that summer visitors don't, like Lake Michigan frozen - seriously an amazing thing to see. On the positive side you will get lower rates on hotels and possibly cars. Winter or summer Chicago is a neat place to visit . Dress warm , dress in layers, and if you ent a car pay close attention to tire pressure. Really cold temps reduce tire pressure and reduce the amount of flexibility in the rubber. The result is that you crunch the unseen pothole and the combination of low pressure and low flexibility cause the tire to blow off the rim. Have fun BTW the reason that Chicago is called the Windy City has nothing to do with meteorology; The name was given by NY writers after listening to the oratory of Chicago politicians former resident Navy Pier is really cool at Christmas time! There is soooooo much to do no matter what season. Like everyone else says, if you stand the cold, go for it. Well, as a lifelong Chicagoan, I'd say yes. To really appreciate Chicago, you'd have to visit it in the warmer months. There is so much more going on that you get a better feel for the city, it's pace, the people, etc. Everyone in the winter time is bundled up and moving quickly with no time to talk. The only activities that you'd want to do are indoors. In the warmer months, there's baseball games, walking in the park, eating at an outdoor cafe, riding in the open top of a doubledecker tour bus or in one of the sightseeing boats on the river, etc. If we had mountains to ski on here that would be different, but we don't. Granted, the city looks nice after it snows, especially along Michigan Ave with the holiday lights and all, but most of the really good things about Chicago (street fairs, etc.) you'd have to be here in the summer to experience. Still, if you want to shop and visit museums and other indoor stuff, I guess you could do that. |
