South Side Chicago...safe?

Travel Info
Is it middles class? Is it safe to live there ?? Thinking of relocating.
Alot of jobs there??

Travel Tips
uh, many parts of it are not very good.
yeah, i lived and worked down there for several years, 83rd, stoney island or thereabouts, a long time ago.

i guess it depends on where you go.
hyde park near the university of chicago is even sketchy.
its not a good place in general.

the good places in chicago are sort of the north side, like north of the chicago river. that is where alot of the clubs and citylife is.
that and the loop.

jobs...uh i dont know. i can think of better places to live and work. dont just plan to go there and try to find a job. its not a good place, unless you have to live there.

There are parts that are safe. My sister lives in a highrise condo development along King Drive near McCormick Place convention center. It's a really nice middle to upper middle class neighborhood. Hyde Park has parts that are nice, but they've had some trouble lately. It's near the University of Chicago The near south side area, from about Roosevelt Road to 35th St. and from State Street east to the lake, is nice but very expensive now; lots of condos and townhouses. There are parts of the Southwest side that are OK, but it's mostly middle class bungalow type neighborhoods. Don't let anyone tell you the South Side is all bad and dangerous. Most, if not all, of those people have never lived there or never even been there, ust heard a lot of stories.
I'm from the South Side..it depends on how south you're going. From the 80 through the 100s its cool. Below that it depends on if you're moving southeast or southwest...
It depends where on the south side you're referring to. South to Roosevelt is pretty safe, and it continues safe along Indiana, Wabash, Michigan, and State down to near Cermak. South of that it gets a little dicey - there's some pockets of safety around 35th and Halsted, a neighborhood called Bridgeport. Then it's bad again, and is once again safe when you get to the lakefront around 55th Street, the area around the University of Chicago.
I am a South Sider born and raised. There are parts that are sketchy, but a lot of parts that are nice. Middle class to upper class. I grew up in Beverly (I can hear the groans). This is a really nice neighborhood and is safe to the north (sort of), west, and south. East gets sketchy fast. The good thing is, the Rock Island Metra train runs right though there, and you can get to downtown on the express trains in about 20 minutes. Granted, there is not much of a nightlife, but not everyone likes that. It is definitely more affordable and not as "hipper than you" as the north side. The good thing about Chicago is the public transportation. If you are smart and use it, it really doesn't matter where you live. I agree with the comments about Hyde Park and Bridgeport. They are good places to be, but also are getting more expensive. Another option would be to look for western suburbs on the Metra Line (Riverside, Brookfield, etc). These have cool regentrified town centers and there are a lot of new loft/condos within walking distance of the train. Good luck.
