Is Portage Park near Chicago a nice place to live? |
Travel Info Is it a safe area? Is renting an apartment outrageously high in this area of Chicago? Travel Tips it depends on where you look, Portage Park can be pricey, it is safe. Look in the area round Portage Park, Jefferson Park is good, as is Wicker Park and Edison Park. Others it's a little pricey but it is a safe place, clean, semi friendly people for chicago area No, rent is not ridiculously high. It's cute, green and a good option for families and within easy access of public transit for young adults to get out. BTW, it's a neighborhood in the city proper (on the Northwest Side). Portage Park is in the city proper just not "Downtown" . Rent is more reasonable and the neigborhood is mostly working class people LOTS of families and stay at home moms too. Portage Park is safe, and it's a nice area. It's also less expensive than neighborhoods fruther east. However, it's not really known for its apartments - it's more an area with small houses, kind of single family homes for those who want to live in the city but be close to the expressway and O'Hare. i don't think rent is bad. there are a lot of 2-3 flats for rent and multi units. so i think you'd be able to find a place to rent. as far as safety---it's not an area i would live in. my brothers live in portage park (for over 10 yrs) and my brother has a 3 flat he rents there. but in the past year, their car has been vandalized at least 3 times. he's also had his garbage can and sprinkler stolen. the one neighbor had a flat tire for weeks and never fixed it. portage park has a lot of working class families, renters and immigrants--not that there is anything wrong with immigrants (as my mom is one), but the businesses in the area will cater to that, such as polish bakeries. i also don't recall a lot of stay at home moms, but that may have changed over the years. it isn't an area with college students or city workers. or if like things walking distance, you won't get that there either. and it is "crowded" with street parking and such. i used to lived in lincoln park and old irving when i was single--renting. now stay home with kids, i want safety, less congestion, but still want access to the city-short commute for my husband, but good schools. we bought north of portage park--in the norwood and edison park area. this area is safer, quiet, parks, clean, easy street parking, more families, more suburban, city workers live here--cops, fireman...it seems safer, better elem schools too. i think where you live will depend a lot on your needs and who is living with you. Portage Park is in Chicago and is safer than most. Rent is average priced. |
