Can anyone give me advice on moving to Chicago?

Travel Info
I live in Indiana and I want to move to Chicago. Can anyone give me any pointers on good locations in the Chicago area?

Travel Tips
Depends on your budget, where you work, etc. If you work downtown, you can get good public transportation anywhere. Some of the hot neighborhoods are Wicker Park/Bucktown (hipster hangout), Lakeview (yuppie neighborhood near Wrigley Field), Roscoe Village (where the yuppies go once they have kids and get a dog) and Edgewater (where I live; mixed community close to the lake). Andersonville is also pretty cool, but so many new shops, restaurants and bars are moving into the area that the rents will skyrocket out of reach pretty soon. And Rogers Park on the far north side of the city is kind of funky; it's home to Loyola University's north campus and still have a lot of the old hippies living there who came to the neighborhood in the first place. All of these are on the north side of the city. There are a few areas south along Lake Shore drive that are pretty nice (Hyde Park and near the South Shore Country Club... the Country Club area is pretty far away from downtown). You may also want to check out the area West of the loop around Greektown, but that's mostly (if not all) condos now). The most reasonably priced area with the best amenties, to me, is Edgewater. Rent is still cheap (you can find a one bedroom for $600-900), there are some nice new restaurants coming into the neighborhood and a independent bookstore or two. And for some reason a lot of yoga studios are opening up.

I just moved away from the Chicagoland area because of a job transfer. Are you looking to move to Chicago or the area? cause the Chicagoland area is huge. It goes all the way up to the border of WI. and pretty far west into McHenry county. I'm not sure how far south the "area" is considered. It's a really big area. The prices are pretty high for housing. There is a definite difference between WI and just inside the Illinois border because it's considered the "Chicagoland area". I recommend visiting several times and checking out different areas and seeing what suits you. Are you a "yuppie" and want to live in a condo with a modern look? Or do you want to be in the burbs and have a little yard? Or do you want to go further out and it be similar to Indiana but just a train ride or a 45 min car ride into the city? There's a lot different sections to the city. You can also request some catalogs of Chicago and/or apartment guides and info. Try going to the Cook county websites. Good luck!! And be prepared for traffic, traffic, and more traffic!!!
Well, that's a ltitle broad - there are lots of good locations in the Chicago area - but to give you an idea of some nice neighborhoods, try around the corner of Clark and Belmont (Lakeview), the corner of Sheffield and Fullerton (Lincoln Park), the area around Clark and Division (the Gold Coast), the area around the intersection of Damen, Fullerton, and Milwaukee (Bucktown), and the area just west of the Loop, around Halsted and Adams (Greektown). But that's just a guideline - there are many nice areas in and around those. In a way, it might be better to ask what to *avoid* - which would be the far west side, especially along Lake west of Western.
Do you want to live in the city or suburbs? The suburbs will be cheaper and is still very close to the city. DuPage county has a lot of good areas, and Kane County is a little farther west, but you can get the most for your money there.
I think it depends on you. Your age, your needs and your income. Are you young, like to go out? Do you want to be able to walk to bars, restaurants and businesses? Do you have a family? Need good schools? Renting or buying? Where do you work? What do you want your commute to be like? When my husband and I were dating, we lived in Lincoln Park--close to everything, great night life, didn't even need a car. We now have a family, still wanted to stay in Chicago, have the mini-van...moved to an area with better schools, not as congested, more families.
I live in Aurora (40 miles west of the lake) and want to move to Indiana. Maybe we can work something out.
Well, it really depends on what you're into, how old you are, what your nationality is and so on. We have many diverse communitys and not so.
