Millennium park downtown is very neat. Shopping around the same area is good too.
Well...I don't know if your kids are girls or how old they are but...you might wanna look at going to the American Girl Place. It's really really fun!!! Hope it helped...
I say walk around Michigan Ave and State Street. Take a look at the windows at Macy's aka Marshall Fields. Also I suggest you go to the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. Lincoln Park Zoo is free during the day only, but if you want you can pay to see the Zoo Lights.

Also checkout the views from the Handcock Building and the Sears Tower..You might want to take a look at Navy Pier as well.

There is a ton of things to do in Chicago, I live here and it is a lot...
I'd hit Second City (http://www.secondcity.com/?id=theatres/c... the training ground for most of the comedians you see on Saturday Night Live and other comedy shows. There is a free improv show after the regular show. Check with theater for the time. There 's also the IO comedy theater (http://www.iochicago.net/) and the Annoyance Theater (http://www.annoyanceproductions.com/).th... Green Mill jazz club (http://www.greenmilljazz.com/) has the some of the best jazz in the city, although Andy's (http://www.andysjazzclub.com/) is pretty hot too. Finally, check out the Signature Room (http://www.signatureroom.com/) at the top of the John Hancock building for dinner and/or drinks.

Hey, the kids are staying home... go nuts.
