What is the best time of year to travel (weather wise) from Chicago to Santa Rosa, CA?

Travel Info
We will be using old Rt 66. We mostly are worried about tornado alley.

Travel Tips
Actually since I am a CA resident, here is my advice, you need to be worried about icy and snowy roads at the higher elevations.
Make sure that your tires are in good condition and have the appropriate air pressure if you are traveling through the winter months (Nov-Mar) You may also need to have a set of tire chains for the mountain passes (some municipalities require them when there is snow on the roads)
Personally, spring in the desert can be beautiful, if you are willing to risk the wet weather that may also occur.
Summer is much too hot, and puts your vehicle at risk for overheating, not to mention yourself.
Fall would also be a good travel time, but again, be aware that the mountains may have snow and the deserts are still in the 60's

Others
obviously enough, it's NEVER more convenient to travel ANYWHERE during the middle of winter, ESPECIALLY if you're coming through colorado / nevada, since you'll get snowed in, in the mountains.
Not right now that is because it is snowing there right now. It would probably be best if you went during summer. Don't worry about tornados. I have been traveling a lot and I have never seen a tornado in my life.So serious do not worry about that.
