maybe Evanston Illinois that's pretty close
NW Indiana-- La Porte, Valpo,south of loop-Tinley Park, Forest Park, west of loop--DuPage county, Northwest of loop--Arlington Hts, Palatine, north--southern Wisconsin[kenosha, Pleasant Prairie].Check the areas with your employer for suggestions, and decide how much a commute you want. Each of these area have "reasonable" train service.
You realize that the word "affordable"is a very subjective word.
go way south or way north or way west.
oak lawn area or as far as orland park south
niles, skokie or evanston north
go at least to harlem west
Rutgers Park
Do you want to live IN the city or in the surrounding 'burbs? That makes a big difference.
