For those who live in or Near Chicago.. can you tell me the pros and consd as you see them? |
Travel Info Thinking of relocating!!! Travel Tips Con: traffic, weather Pro: A variety of neighborhoods, splendid architecture; easy to get around with public transportation. Others I live in a in a suburb of Chicago and let me tell you .. it's AMAZING!! I love it! for one the sports here are awesome ( GO SOX) and the city itself is soo pretty especially at night.( All the buildings and everything) Also, theres tons of stuff to do in the city. The only bad part about it is the cold weather.. right now it's freezing!! but in the summer its hot.. but you'll get use to it. me!! =]] CHICAGO: The Pros: The summers are great! Tons of stuff to do! Lollaplooza, the taste, Six Flags, Cubs, Sox. Great music scene. Easy to get around (Transportation) Great schools Booming Job market Clean Big city environment Diverse neighborhoods Great bars and restaurants Great Architecture The CONS: PRICEY... VERY PRICEY. COLD WINTERS... Brr... High gas prices High taxes City charges you for everything! Everything! Politics... everywhere you have politics... I live and go to school in Chicago right now. Chicago is a great city. If you are considering moving here make sure you check up on the area. This city goes through so many sections regarding people types and ghetto-ness. Jobs are everywhere and public transportation is excellent if you don't have a car. Johnny made a good point too: people are very opinionated which frustrates me at times. Politics politics politics!!! Good luck. Pros: employment opportunities, tons of stuff to do, hang out, go shopping etc. Cons: constant traffic, terrible weather between November and March... Pros of living in Chicago: Big city, lots of employment opportunities. Lots of people (if you like bustling cities, that is. I personally would go crazy living in some podunk town) Lots of sports: professional, college and even some great high school action. Humongous nightlife. Live music playing somewhere in the city every night of the week (rock, jazz, blues, hip hop, indie, you name it.) Lots of nightclubs, bars, dance clubs... most stay open until 2 am during the week and 4 or 5 am on the weekends. Great lakefront. Fantastic during the summer (bike paths, jogging paths, swimming - if you're not afraid of getting in the lake water -, volleyball, softball and baseball diamonds. Lots of social clubs, designed for single people to meet while participating in sports, cooking classes, dancing, etc. Great architecture World class museums Lots of park spaces throughout the city. People are generally nice. Decent public transportation - you can get from one end of the city to the other for $2 Winter - alright it does get cold, but there's something cool about being able to enjoy snow and warm weather in the same place Every nationality - nice to be able to meet and learn something about people other than people only like you Great restaurants - thanks to the mix of nationalities, you can sample great food from around the world right here. Cheap - despite what other people here may say, Chicago is pretty cheap. You can find a decent one bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood for about $600 a month. I live in Edgewater, a great neighborhood and there are apartments here for that price. In addition, there are a lot of grocery stores, small and large. Because of that, they have to compete in price, so you will always find cheap food somewhere. Cons: Lots of people. Like i said, if you don't like crowds, you may not like it here. True there are a lot of areas in the city where you can get away from the crowds, but not totally While having a car is nice, it can be a little expensive: paying for parking sometimes, buying a state license plate and sticker every year, buying a city sticker every year, gas (about $2.39 a gal. right now) Too many "tourists": by that I mean people that move here and never really know the city but think they do because of what they've heard. They'll tell you that the entire south Side is bad or the West Side is bad but they've never been there. Sure, both of those areas have their rough spots, but there are murders and rapes that take place in the Gold Coast, Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park, etc. and all of the other "good" parts of the city. Maybe not as many other parts, but isn't one rape or murder too many? Anyway, that's the opinion of a guy who's lived here all his life... |
