Is the Hyde Park area ghetto? |
Travel Info I am looking for apartments and I found a couple I like around the Hyde park area near south shore drive. But when I looked up zip code states, it was like 3 x as many black people as white. I am just wondering if it's a safe neighborhood, I'm not racist. Travel Tips hyde park is fine, everything surrounding it is not however Others ..I've only driven thru there. It wasn't ghetto per se but I wouldn't live there or walk around at night. Beautiful neighborhood especially the UofC campus. I did not feel threatened walking around during the day. No one hasseled me. Many people commute to campus via train and live in safer neighborhoods. Probably the safest areas in Hyde Park will be where students live. Venturing west of Hyde Park is not recommended. Stay away from Washington Park. No, it's middle class BUT the U of C students drive up the rents. And it is a little bit dangerous at night. Consider other neighborhoods unless you work in Hyde Park. It's not ghetto in hyde park, but you have to be careful there through the night. don't walk around at night by yourself.keep your eyes and ears open at all times if you have to go out at night time. Hyde Park itself is relatively safe - that's the area around the University of Chicago, centered around 50th to 60th street, from the lake to near the edge of Washington Park. It's a very mixed neighborhood, black and white, and actually is a nice example of how races can live together in harmony - Hyde Park has both groups playing in the parks, walking around the university, and taking part of the culture without much difficulty. The surrounding area isn't exactly "ghetto" - it's relatively poor, but gentrifying, particularly Kenwood, just north of Hyde Park. Parts of Washington Park are quite nice as well. They are indeed majority black neighborhoods, but aren't particularly unsafe, as compared to neighborhoods like Englewood, which truly are. I think Hyde Park is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago....I love it because in my experience, the people are very friendly. There is this very delicious restaurant you should also try out there called Far East Kitchen....the best Chinese/Cantonese food around...a friend of mine lives in Hyde Park and she loves it... there are alot of college students and everyone pretty much minds their own business. |
