Surrounding area? Despite what a previous respondant said, I wouldn't do the Harold Washington Library. It can get very loud, because of kids who come to "study", the "studying" mostly taking the form of really loud conversations taking place over stacks of books which they don't open.

I don't know how far you mean to go when you refer to "the surrounding area", but at midday the Third Coast (1260 N. Dearborn) tends to be very quiet, is brightly lit and spacious, and the service has greatly improved since I wrote about some strange experiences there a few years back. The DePaul Campus downtown has a library, as does Roosevelt University, both tend to be far, far quieter than the Harold Washington library, and I've never had any trouble getting into either.

Others
coffee shops, internet cafe's, bookstores. bookstores are my fav
experience
Coffee shops are always a good bet - there's a Panera Bread that's popular with students at Congress and State, a Barnes and Noble just north of there at Jackson and State, a coffee shop called Millenium Perk just west of the park on (I think) Madison, and a Caribou Coffee just across from Millenium Park itself.

harold washington library.
Depends on what time of year it is. During the winter I'd say the Harold Washington Library and The Chicago Cultural Center (Not a lot of people visit this place, sad to say, and there are lots of floors that are out of the way and isolated). I'd avoid coffee shops only because there's a lot of noise (coffee machines gushing and people talking, etc., not to mention the lack of space in most downtown coffee shops). But in the warmer months, head out to Grant Park. Lots of open space, relatively quiet, etc. It may not have wireless access (unless you have one of those Sprint wireless cards things in your laptop), but it's a good place to study.
