The slums, you don't need a map or directions because in Chicago everywhere you go is slums.
Depends on what exactly you are going for. Most of the museums on the lakefront are pretty good-especially museum of science and industry, shedd aquarium is pretty good-do spend the extra and see the reef exhibite it is really good, art institute also, millenium park is pretty good and the bean-also known as the cloud gate if you want its official nam.e, also try navy pier. The shopping downtown is pretty good if you don't mind alot in sales tax. Another thing if you are going on the week end take the train everywhere because the traffic is terrible and it is much cheaper than paying for parking.Expect to pay at least twenty bucks for parking if not more than that. Never leave to go into or out of Chicago any time between 4:30 and 6 or 6:30 during the week because the rush hour traffic is very bad and will probably at least double the time that you need to get anywhere. Most of these things are some of the things that Chicago is known for, also try Jani's pizza.
I live like 40 minutes to an hour away from Chicago. Of course that is all depending on the traffic.
Buy a citypass. You can purchase them for $50 and it gives you admission to the art museum, the field museum, the planetarium, the shedd aquarium, the sears tower sky deck, and the John Hacock observatory. You can get the citypass at anyone of the places that it gives you admission to, but you have to ask for it. Also for $10 you can purchase a CTA visitor's pass. That gives you unlimited use the L train and the bus. Parking in Chicago is rediciously high. The cheapest I found is $8. Michegan Ave is the place to go shopping and you need to see Navy Pier. I believe on Thursdays free admission to the art museum.
