YMCA Chicago?

Can someone tell me about the rooms for rent at the Y here in Chicago...on Chicago Avenue? I posted and ad looking for a place to rent because I will be going to school in the fall and needed some place cheaper to stay than my current place right and this girl from the Y responded saying they have housing available. But I don't know, is it safe to stay there? I mean location is great..it's only two blocks from the school I will be attending but if I'll be staying with bums and stuff, I'd rather pay rent than pay with my life....but I'm sure it's not that bad.

The neighborhood is improving but it wasn't that long ago that was a really big bum hangout. There was or still might be a Ben and Jerry's in that place that was run by homeless guys trying to get straight. I would have to say don't do it.

I don't know about staying there. Despite the improvements in the neighborhood, the characters hanging out there and living there still look pretty seedy. I'm sure you can find something a little nicer even if it isn't right near the school (are you attending Loyola? It's the only school I can think of right near there). Try looking in a local paper like the Sun Times or Tribune. There are lots of ads for people renting rooms or small effenciency apartments that are a lot better options than living at the Y. They may cost a little more but it's worth it.
I've never been to that Y before. but the area it's in is pretty much in downtown, in the really nice area.
I will try to unpuzzle you. Do not stay at the Y-this just is not safe. Have you tried Craigs List? I needed to stay somewhere in Chicago this summer that was inexpensive, and I found some really great, inexpensive places to live. It is amazing that some people will give up where they are living for their job, travel, etc.
