Residents of Chicago i need your help!...planning events? |
Travel Info Yes im a resident but need suggestions. I have a friend visiting thurs->sun, trying to put things together for us to do. she has visited me here b4 so im trying to look for different things, besides navy pier, musuems, shopping, etc. What i have already: thursday night i have tickets to see Wicked, friday night i had planned to go to jokes and notes but thats not definite (depending on featured comedian) so i need suggestions for the day and night. saturday my sorority has a banquet in the morning and i was going to go to a poetry set at negro league cafe that evening. and sunday morning we are doing a walk for charity before she leaves. I just need suggestions for anything u have done or know of that was kind of cool, living here we take so much for granted and don't pay attention to whats here. i know there is a spot here that drag queens do shows but i don't know the name. i checked citysearch.com but haven't really found anything. Travel Tips Pick up a copy of Time Out Chicago magazine. it should be available at most newsstands or book stores that sell magazines. Gotta say, it's pretty packed with everything going on in Chicago that week. It comes out on Wednesdays. The magazine is divided into categories such as art events, movies, theater, clubs, music, books, etc. I'm not saying it's the end-all and be-all of what's going on in Chicago that week, it impressed even me, a lifelong Chicagoan. There are a lot of things that are going on just for one week, so it's hard to say what to do. Not sure what Jokes and Notes is; never heard of it. But there's always, Second City, Zanies in old town, a bunch of smaller comedy clubs and shows (again, check Time Out magazine - they have a special section just for comedy shows in the city). And the other person is right, the Baton is the drag show, althought there are a couple of other places that have drag shows, even some with women dressing up as men. Others The show your looking for is Baton's. You can also go to Sushi Samba, I'm not sure if it's friday or Saturdays but they do have live samba dancers. It's a pretty cool place. the drag show is at the baton club downtown. we went there for a bachelorette party. it is so much fun. i however, do not remember the street it is on, but with the name, you should be able to get the address. another fun place to go is wise fools pub in lincoln park. you can catch great local bands that do original music. Take them to the top of the Sears or the Hancock to see an incredible view. Also, they have to try some unique Chicago style pizza so take them to Gino's or Lou Malnatis. You could also call the Jerry Springer show to get some free tickets which would be a hell of a lotta fun. Did you know that Chicago is one of the top cities for theatre? Surprising since NY gets all of the exposure. You can get cheap tix for lots of different theatres at www.goldstarevents.com. Also, at the library on Michigan and Washington, there is a visitors bureau that has all sorts of great information on tours and stuff. There are all kinds of tours from Black Chicago to Architectural tours (we have some of the best architecture around). I am not sure if you are my soror, but in any case I am always willing to lend advice for a worthy cause such as the-friend-in-town itinerary. I know it can be a lot of pressure. Seems like you received you responses about the Baton. It is a fun place and it is definitely something different to experience. What about listening to Jazz if Jokes and Notes falls through? You could go to Jazz Showcase on Grand Ave., or The Backroom on Rush St. Both are a little pricey but you are sure to have a pleasant evening. Another night time activity might be Rhumba. Great food and after hours 9:30-10:00'ish, they literally push back the tables and there is salsa dancing. Sushi Samba was already suggested and is also a nice option. The Baton has a late-late show so you could maybe do one of these and make a show there too. |
