Best Place to raise children in/around Chicago? |
Travel Info Relocation possible to Chicago and I am trying to research the area. Needed an opinion as to the best/safest neighborhood in and around Chicago to raise children. Travel Tips In the city, probably the north side (Lincoln Park and/or Roscoe Village - from Fullerton to Addison and the lake to Ashland, particularly along streets like Roscoe) or the northwest side along and near the O'Hare Blue Line - neighborhoods like Portage Park and Jefferson Park. Those are really nice neighborhoods with small homes, families, and nice parks, yet with remarkably easy public transportation to downtown. In the suburbs, most of the suburbs are nice, but certainly the ones that everyone raves the most about are, on the south side, Homewood/Flossmoor and Olympia Fields; on the west side, Oak Park, Hinsdale, and Naperville; and on the north side, Evanston, Northbrook, Buffalo Grove and Highland Park (among many others in the area.) All of them are pleasant places to raise children and have easy train access to the city. Others Well, I'm guessing that a lot of people will tell you that nowhere in Chicago is safe for children, but there are some decent places. Check out Roscoe Village. It seems to be filled with young couples with babies. Real quiet neighborhood. The area of Lincoln Ave. from about Addison to Wilson is pretty family-oriented. it's undergone a transformation of sorts, with lots of fancy new pubs and antique shops replacing the hillbilly bars and junk shops. The park at Lincoln and Montrose is filled on the weekend with Little League baseball teams. There's a big library nearby and a small Germanic town type place that is popular with families (the area has a heavy Germanic heritage). There are probably a few other neighborhoods, but I can't think of them right now. And of course there are a lot of suburbs that people will suggest. If you want to stay close to Chicago, check out Evanston. Parts of it are really nice and quiet. Look at Edison Park or Jefferson Park in the city, the NW side is probably your best bet. Some suburbs to look at are Park Ridge, Elk Grove Village Glencoe and wheeling to the north. La Grange, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Naperville to the west, and Orland Park, Frankfort, Mokena or Homewood to the south. Good Luck on your search! Naperville. It's a suburb of east of Chicago. About 30 miles or so. It's rated as one of the best places in the U.S to raise a family. Very nice city. http://www.naperville.il.us/ Check it out here ^^ Good luck relocating to where ever you go. Naperville if you can afford it. Metra runs right into Chicago if you need to work there. Bolingbrook, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Mokena, Frankfort are southwest of the city, on the Metra routes, and very nice places to live, if you don't mind congested subarbs, but they have good schools. |
