Hey! I'm taking a trip to Chicago soon, any ideas on what to do?

Travel Info
Just wondering about sites and foods. Cheap things more than likely. I'm going down there within a few weeks. I'm doing it to take pictures for my photography, and just to have an all around vacation. It's just me and my mother. So, what are some things that will make the trip worth while, and leave us wanting more!? :]

Travel Tips
Since this answer could be so long, I kind of focused on food and some on Chicago's specialty, pizza.

You have got to try a restaurant called "Chicago Oven and Pizza Grinder". Expect a line on the weekends and know that it is cash only! Be sure you try their salads and Mediterranean flatbread (this stuff is to die for and I've never found better anywhere else). Their wines are gigantic glasses with quality reds especially and the owner will remember what place "in line" you are -- entirely in his head! No matter how long the wait! The pizzas (that look more like pot pies) are delicious and unique.

The original Pizzeria Uno and Due's (not the chain) are nearby and Rush Street is loaded with great restaurants. One more pizza recommendation is Giordano's. Carson's Ribs on Ontario St. is still a Chicago classic (if you like ribs of course ;) and there are so many steakhouses, it would be hard to list them all ... though they can get pricey ... Morton's is a classic.

Go to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field (north of the city near Belmont and Addison) -- even if you're lukewarm about baseball in general, this is a cool experience ... just make sure the weather is good and buy good seats in advance!

I would personally NOT really recommend Navy Pier, as it is basically an overcrowded tourist attraction (in my opinion), though shopping there (and at North Pier) can be occasionally fun.

If tall buildings give you a kick, go to the top of the Sears Tower or the John Hancock building for an incredible view ... just don't buy drinks in the "ritzy" (read: overpriced and overdressed) "95th Room" in the Hancock tower. Unless you like $15 martinis that are as weak on alcohol as they are on value.

The Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue downtown from Millenium Park to roughly Water Tower place) is really cool and awesome for shopping -- the new Millenium Park is beautiful. Catch a concert there if you get a chance and like what's being offered. If you're on the Mile, eat at a restaurant called "Heaven on 7" at 600 N. Michigan Avenue. Affordable and delicious. This Cajun restaurant kicks butt and if you want, you can catch a movie in the same building before or after.

Lots of good restaurants on Rush Street ... Clark Street ... all over really -- you should get a guide book or two to help guide you, since I don't know what kind of foods you or your Mom would like.

The Shedd Aquarium (near Navy Pier), Museum of Science and Industry (57th St.), Adler Planetarium / Omnimax Theatre, Field Museum of Natural History, and Art Institute (downtown) can all be fascinating (and virtually free), depending on your interests. I especially like the Aquarium and Planetarium ... but since you're interested in photography ...

The Museum of Sci/Industry is near the University of Chicago. Go to the lakefront (between 53rd and 60th streets -- don't stray; the neigborhoods to the the north, south and west are not as nice); you'll find some wonderful sources for photography.

I could go on and on ... it's a great city! Source(s): lived in/around Chicago for 18 years

Hey, I have always wanted to go to Chicago to take one of those dinner cruises on the lake. I am planning to go this year toward the end of summer. You can check out things online at yahoo or google search under Chicago travel or check with a travel agent or a travel search engine like travelocity.
I live in a suburb of Chicago, but I can tell you that the only real museum that is worth seeing is the Museum of Science and Industry. Also you HAVE to eat at the Italian Village (near the Sears Tower). Also the double decker bus tours I heard are nice. Also bring a sweater for the chilly evenings! Hope you have a great time! The Navy Pier is a little to hyped if you ask me, but if you are bored, check it out. There is free trolly services commencing soon!
How soon are you coming? If it's very soon, the weather will still be a little messy, so you'll probably want to do more indoor stuff like people mentioned, like NavyPier, the museums, theater, comedy clubs, etc.

But if you're coming in the summer, or in the warmer months, there's much more to do. Street fairs, festivals in grant park, outdoor movies in Grant Park, bike riding along the lakefront (rentals are available), the zoos (Lincoln Park and Brookfield), the Garfield Park Conservatory (lots of cool plants and an outdoor market), Greek Town (lots of great greek restaurants), shopping on Michigan ave, Belmont Ave. Armitage Ave., etc.. If you're big on the photography, the lakefront offers great views of the city. In fact, take one of boat tours out on the lake and get a shot of the city skyline from the water. You can catch a rental boat on the Chicago River near Michigan Ave. or at Navy Pier.

The best way to find out what is going on and to find out what inexpensive things are happening is to pick up a copy of Time Out Chicago magazine when you get here. They also have a website (http://www.timeout.com/chicago/index.jsp... Or check out the Metromix website when you get here or just before you get here. (http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/).... They update it daily. And also check out the Hot Tix website when you come (http://www.hottix.org/). it's a place where you can buy day-of-the-show theater tickets for half price.

have fun....
