It is a fairly old hotel that was purported to be the world's largest before the Las Vegas mega-hotels. It has recently undergone a huge rennovation and should be up to date. It is located at the far edge of the downtown area but still has Grant Park and the Museum Campus across the street. You pay for that location. I wouldn't walk around there after dark.
The Chicago Hilton and Towers (formerly the Conrad Hilton Hotel) is probaby one of the classiest hotels in the world. it's expensive and worth every penny. Not sure what the other guy meant by "don't walk around there at night". The neighborhood has gone up scale so much that the only housing around there is condo and lofts. The area is heavily patrolled by police and all the former dive bars have been closed. The only remnant of the area's seedy past is the old Pacific Garden Mission and that's seldom used now. The only problems you might have in the area is some homeless guy hitting you up for a quarter.

The neighborhood is much better than it used to be. Also the end scene of the movie the Fugtive with Harrison Ford was filmed right at that hotel.

I agree that the Chicago Hilton is the nicer hotel but the Conrad is pretty good, too. I don't know prices off hand but I would imagine the Hilton is a little less. I stayed there about 7 years ago and got a room for under $100, but I did have to ask the management for something cheaper than what they offered me.

My personal philosophy on hotels is that it's a place to stay while you enjoy the city you are traveling to. The hotel has to be clean but I'm there more for the destination, not for the amenities of the hotel. If you're the same the Conrad will be fine. If you like being pampered Chicago Hilton and Towers is the way to go.
