Is Chicago a gentler, kinder, cleaner version of NYC?

Hmmmm..that is a toughy, Chi!

my love for both cities is fanatical, to say the least, BUT...

If you throw a dinner from Cafe Babareeba on the table, I would have to say CHICAGO!

Others
gentler and cleaner maybe but not kinder .
Actually, no. The violent crime rate in Chicago is much higher than that in NYC.
If that's what you are looking for, I suggest Toronto, Canada, or Sydney or Melbourne, Australia.
No, I think you're confusing Chicago with Boston.
Chicago can be a tough town.
However, Boston has all those attributes.
Never heard anything like that. That's a pretty sensitive question.
That was true 20 years ago but New York has REALLY cleaned up since then. Chicago has too but not to nearly the same degree.

I was in NYC in 1987 and horrified on how dirty it was. My memory was a cop in every fast foor place in Manhattan. I didn't feel safe at all. I was there for a day after 5 days in Boston, the latter has some pushy people but was a much nicer place.

We decided to give NYC another try in 2003. What a difference. Drivers were politer, the city was cleaner and a place you wanted to be. WE loved it. We live in the Chicago suburbs and like Chicago too but NYC is just amazing. If I could affore to live there I would.

I agree with the other answerers regarding crime. Daley isn't quite a Giuliani.
