Chicago north neighborhoods? |
Travel Info can someone give me a safe RACIALLY MIXED neighborhood on the north side? Looking to move to Chicago, but have heard that the city is pretty segregated; is that the truth? I was looking at bucktown, wicker park, and edgewater, but will I stick out like a sore thumb, because of my skin color? Travel Tips The city is, sadly, rather segregated, and the north side is known as being kind of "white," particularly Lincoln Park. As you go further and further north, though, the segregation tapers off a bit. Edgewater is probably the most mixed of the ones you've listed. Bucktown and Wicker Park have become very gentrified - i.e. white. That all said, though, even if you chose to live in Lincoln Park, as segregated as Chicago is, it's not really "racist." It's just segregated. Nobody's going to give you a second glance if you happen to walk down Clark Street near Wrigley Field. If you really want a great racially mixed neighborhood - though it's south - you might consider Hyde Park, around the University of Chicago, or the South Loop. Both of those neighborhoods are 50/50 black and white, and surprisingly everyone seems to mostly get along. Others I would recommend both Lakeview (south of Wrigley field) and Edgewater as neighborhoods that are or are becoming more diverse. Part of this would be your age; Bucktown, Wicker Park, Lakeview are more young folks; Edgewater / Uptown are for older (ie 40+) folks... good luck....do move here...Chicago is a great city.. I agree, stay near North. |
