Where else in Wisconsin? |
Travel Info We are planning on visiting the Apostle Islands sometime this summer. Do you have any suggestions as to other WI places we should visit? We actually live in WI, so please only answer if you have been somewhere special or know of a festival, etc. that you think we shouldn't overlook. Don't just suggest WI Dells, House on the Rock, etc. We've done all the touristy things like that already. Travel Tips What about St. Croix river, which borders MN and WI, or the North Shore of Lake Superior? I know it's in MN but it's very close to where you will be. Others The Rhinelander area is beautiful and relaxing (but watch out for the Hodags!). Also, Geneva Lake is great -- stay at The Abbey in Fontana, rent a boat, get pampered, etc. Summerfest in Milwaukee is the best festival, but lots of the smaller ethnic ones are great, too. And the State Fair in August is the best fair in the country -- especially for the music tents, great beer, and cream puffs! Drive over to Michigan and check out some of their stuff. Warren Dunes Alleghen Dam Holland All along Lake Michigan, so not a dreadfully long way. The only negative is you have to drive through Gary. A beautiful trip is to drive north along Hwy 35- the Great River Road- up the Mississippi River from La Crosse. There are beautiful little towns all along the way, Fountain City, Alma, Nelson, and Pepin, full of great stores and antique shops. Be sure to stop in Stockholm, there are wonderful shops, art galleries and a terrific bakery. There is a beautiful historic hotel in Pepin, The Anderson House where you can stay, and they have a great restaurant. http://www.historicandersonhouse.com/... In Nelson, take the bridge across to Wabasha, MN. There you can visit the National Eagle Center, and get up close and personal with their resident eagles. It is a small center, but is a great time. You can have lunch at Slippery's Tavern (of Grumpy Old Men fame), just down the road. http://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/... From Wabasha, head down Hwy 61 (MN) to Winona. This is another beautiful riverside town. http://visitwinona.com/ In Winona, after seeing the sights, you can cross the bridge back into Wisconsin, practically right back where you started. I live in Western Wisconsin Have you been up to Door County? It's beautiful there, lots of outdoor things to do. There's also thiw great Sweedish restaurant we ate at that has a grass roof with goats grazing on it. Lots of fun! http://www.door-county.com/ http://www.doorcountynavigator.com/html/... |
