What does the carvings on the Michigan Ave bridge in Chicago stand for? |
Travel Info We went to Chicago today,(drove thru a tornado on the way back.) There are carvings on the Michigan Ave bridge, (on both sides) of a angel? woman standing over a group of men. My husband and I are wondering what they were. Travel Tips The bridge also has Plaques embedded in the sidewalk mark the spot of the original Fort Dearborn, where Chicago's first settlers staked their claim off of Lake Michigan. The bas-relief sculptures on the bridge represent important events in early Chicago history. They are interesting and controversial because they depict Native Americans as the bad guys in the struggle over the "Chickaguo" territory. There is one on the Northwest pier of the Michigan Ave. Bridge. It is labeled "The Pioneers" and represents the westward movement in the US. The other one that you saw with the angle is called "The Discoverers" ca 1930. Both were carved by a man named James Earle Fraser who is known for many famous sculptures including the statue of Benjamin Franklin in PA. Hope this helps some.
