Is it safe for a single woman to live in Edgewater, Chicago (Kenmore /Thorndale)? What about at night? |
Travel Info I'd have to take the CTA downtown everyday and come back every night, sometimes late at night (10-11pm, or more). Would it be ok to just grab a cab from the Thorndale stop? How safe is the Thorndale stop? Is Bryn Mawr safer? Thanks for your help! Travel Tips I live in Edgewater and take the Bryn Mawr el frequently. It can be a little intimidating at night, what with some shady looking characters hanging out at night there. But it's well lit and single women use it and walk home from there the time late at night, either heading east into Edgewater or west into Andersonville. Single women live all around Edgewater. Granted there are some people you might be wary of and you have to pay attention to your surroundings, but it's done everyday by women. I attend the beat meetings in Edgewater and most of the crime there is between people who know each other (domestic fighting/attacks, etc.). The cops often cruise around Bryn Mawr at night, if that helps. If you don't feel safe taking the train, and depending on where you live, you can ride either the Sheridan 151 or 147 bus or the Broadway bus. It'll take a little long, but if there's trouble, there's a operator right there. And it might let you off a little closer to your house. Like I said, I live there and see woman use the train and walk home all the time. Just have to keep aware and prepared. Don't worry.... Oh, and Thorndale is a little more isolated, but it's also brightly lit and near a busy intersection. Others Bryn Mawr, being closer to Andersonville, is likely to be a bit safer. The area is gentrifying rapidly, and I'd feel OK there during the day, but I'm not sure about night, particularly around Thorndale. You could take a cab from Thorndale, but it's not always easy to just grab a cab there. It's not exactly unsafe there - there's a lot of students there from Loyola and Andersonville, a safe neighborhood, is not far away - but it's not quite the same level of safety as, say, Lakeview or Lincoln Park. You might wish to contact the nearest police station and ask how the crime is in the area. |
