Moving to Chicago - What will be the strangest thing I will see? |
Travel Info Out of all the Chicago sites what is different to any other city? Travel Tips Well, it's not so much the sites in Chicago that are "strange" or "different". Chicago is pretty much straightforward when it comes to architecture, etc. It's the things that we DO here that might seem a little strange to you, like: 1. Dyeing the Chicago River green on St. Patrick's day (it's ALREADY green!) 2. putting up chairs, ironing boards, milk crates, etc. to save your parking space in front of your house that you shoveled out during the winter time (a Chicago tradition) 3. that fact that almost every nationality has their own little "city" within the city. Lots of cities have a Chinatown or a Little Italy, but we also have an Indiantown, Swedishtown, Polishtown, Germantown, Mexicantown, Greektown etc. 4. the CTA el train late at night (all sorts of weird things happen on the train at night) 5. people fighting over who's better, the Cubs or the White Sox (I'm a Sox fan but even i think it's stupid that people sometimes come to blows over BASEBALL. And right now, both of them kinda suck) 6. the way people talk. It's changing a bit now, because a lot of transplants (college grads, wanna be musicians and actors, etc.) are moving here and bringing their own accents with they, but you can still hear traditional Chicagoans say "I'm going over by dere", or the whole "dem, dese and dose" instead of "them, these and those". There are a bunch more but I can't remember them all right now. Others Probably a white person. A giant "Kidney bean" or painted cows The Mayor is a monarch (King). As you probably know, it snows in Chicago in the winter. If someone takes the time and effort to shovel out a parking spot it is their spot all winter. People put out laundry baskets, patio furniture and any sort of junk to save their parking spot. If you do park in one of these spots prepare for verbal abuse and/or vandalism to your car. Ketchup on a hotdog Crucifixion in the park....every Good Friday in Harrison Park. |
