Travel Tips
Chicago is going to be REALLY busy on fireworks nights.
I would recommend bringing a good pair of walking shoes :-)
There will be lots of people, I would not be worried about any safety issues, especially around Navy Pier. I've walked all over that area at night. Have fun!
Others
It's pretty safe around the navy Pier area at night. Lots of cops and other people around. If it's a nice night, it might even be cool to walk back. If you'd rather take a cab, there are plenty in front of the pier. But with so many people standing out there after the fireworks trying to catch a cab also, it might take a while.
Walking is the best way when in chicago. When there is an attraction it is way to crowded and sometimes you can walk faster than a cab. So much to see while walking around downtown and as long as you are not alone I wouldn't worry about anything. Just stay on the main streets not the alleys and there should be no problem.
