What's up with Chicago freeway exits?

Travel Info
When I was on i-290, I noticed all the street exits saying numbers like n1500 w590 or something similar to that. I'm guessing it has something to do with direction, but I have no clue what it's for exactly.

Thanks,
-a curious visitor

It's the grid system. "Zero" is State and Madison, one of the few corners left standing after the Chicago Fire. Every 800 numbers is one mile.

So, if you're at 800 North and 800 West, you are one mile north and one mile west of State and Madison. If you're at 2400 North and 400 West, you're three miles north and half a mile west of State and Madison.

Makes it hard to get lost. If you know a few key streets (i.e. Halsted is 800 West, Belmont is 3200 North, etc.) you can find your way around very easily if you discover that you're at, say, 1000 West and 3400 North.

If you see a number like 1500 North, that means you're 15 blocks north of the center of the city, which is downtown....I believe on the street Madison. A number like 590 west means you're 5, almost six blocks west of the center of the city, which is State Street.
I live in Chicago
All Chicago addresses are measured from the corners of State & Jackson *in terms of of N,E,S ,W
There are 8" hundreds" to a mile .Once you know what major street is located at what " hundred "you can easily calculate the distance between any two addresses.

Most Chicago streets are in a grid pattern with streets running north to south or east to west. The center of the pattern is at State and Madison Streets in the heart of the Loop.

The numbers you are referring to indicate how far away the exit is from the center of the grid. Street addresses are also part of this grid.

On the I-290, Austin should be identified as w6000. This means that you are 60 blocks west of State St.
