Travel Tips
Are there any in Chicago? Chicago is THE place to go for the sites you're looking for!

For some nature sites, you'll want to check out the relatively young Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. We're also home to the Lincoln Park Zoo (which is free), Shedd Aquarium and Oceanarium (beluga whales, dolphins who put on a show, countless cute creatures---world's largest indoor aquarium), Chicago Botanic Garden and Morton Arboretum.

I also really enjoy strolling the paths and gardens in Grant and Millennium parks during nice spring and summer days. Bring along a book if you want to stop at a bench; in any case, definitely bring your walking shoes and your sunglasses. ;-) The views are beautiful. If you like to go bike-riding, you can rent bikes at Navy Pier (there might be other locations from which you can rent, too; I'm not certain) and ride the Lakefront Path. Use caution, though; the path is popular (open to cyclers, rollerbladers, pedestrians and runners all) when it's warm out, and I've seen my share of bicycler/blader collisions.

For museums, you'll want to check out Chicago's Museum Campus, to which the Shedd is a part. It also includes the Field Museum (natural history) and Adler Planetarium. For some Chicago history, you'll want to visit the Chicago History Museum, which until recently was known as the Chicago Historical Society. Chicago is home to a number of smaller historical societies/museums/galleries devoted to various ethnicities; after all, Chicago is known as the city of neighborhoods. You might want to do a search on an ethnic/cultural group that interests you.

The big art museums in the city are the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art. We have a number of art districts worth browsing, including that in the River North neighborhood (part of downtown, but a bit to the Northwest), Pilsen and Wicker Park.

As for inspirational places, the Baha'i Temple in Evanston is one of only seven in the world. It's a gorgeous building.

If you're looking for out-of-the-way bookstores, I would definitely check out Myopic Bookstore in Wicker Park --- it's in a cramped, delightfully creaky building with freely roaming cats. Transitions Bookstore by North/Clybourn is supposed to be great, too -- I've never been. Also look up Quimby's (features local work, comic books, chapbooks, zines; within steps of Myopic), Women & Children First and The Book Cellar (books plus wine is always fun!).

Hope you find this info useful. Sounds like you're willing to go beyond the typical tourist traps to really explore Chicago, and I admire that. I hope you have a wonderful visit! Source(s): Notebaert Nature Museum

Other Travel Tips
Loads.

Grant Park is lovely to wander around. The art gallery is great. Take an Architecture boat trip. Go to the bar/restaurant of the John Hancock building for great views (and avoid paying to go to the Observation desk). There are plnnety of sculptural works of art dotted around the downtown area.

Get a good guidebook and take a walk....Lonely Planet's book even has suggested walking routes
yes, go to the John Hancock building (you take an elevator to the 100-something floor). The view is BREATH-TAKING! You won't regret it a sec.

Then you'll have to visit the Shedd Aquarium/museum and the Adler Planetarium (space museum).

Buy a CITY-PASS, it's $50 but covers access to 7 museums and landmarks (including ones described above). It's much cheaper than paying for each individually and you don't have to wait in the LONG lines at the museums.

Have fun!
There are tons of things to do and see. Check this out. One place sums it all!!
