Travel Tips Most of the north side is safe - anywhere in the Loop, Gold Coast, Michigan Avenue, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wrigleyville, and Bucktown / Wicker Park (if you're looking at a map, just draw a line with Congress on the south, Western on the west, Lawrence on the north, and the lake on the east and you'll have the most popular areas of Chicago.) It's a big city, and there are risks anywhere of course, but for the most part those areas are packed with people day and night, particularly in the summer. The really unsafe areas of Chicago are in the far west and far south sides, and it's unlikely that you'd be there for any reason anyway. Others I went a couple of years ago and stayed at the "W" hotel and it was AWESOME! that hotel is located close to the Navy Peer. Now i don't know my streets....but we were w/in walking distance of several bars, clubs & restaraunts. I never felt in danger at any point. Downtown, Michigan Ave., Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Andersonville, Wrigleyvlle, Lakeview...Near South Loop. All have nice bars and clubs and all are pretty safe areas. Places like Logan Square, Pilsen, Hyde Park, had some nice places to go, but you have to be a little careful. But anyplace can be dangerous or have trouble. There are guys who have gotten beaten up in Lincoln Park bars and Wrigleyville clubs. There have been rapes in those areas too..The bottom line is you have to keep your wits about your EVERYWHERE. their right! no matter what hotel you stay at, in downtown chicago, it is in walking distance of atleast fifty clubs and bars. whatever you do, keep it downtown with the rest of the tourist and don't venture into the neighborhoods outside of the downtown district. everything you need is in walking distance of your hotel. and take the freeway whenever possible! it's been atleast two years since i've been to chicago but there was a club named something like 'budha' or 'funky budha' and that was hot! there's the 'door' (i think that's the name) and 'excalibur' but i'm not sure if that's a gay bar now, and there are about five more just in walking distance of those three! have fun! The last poster referred to the Funky Buddha Lounge, which always plays host to a diverse crowd, a packed dance floor and great music. It's a good time. If you're taking the el, the Funky Buddha is steps from the Blue Line's (O'Hare branch) Grand subway stop. Excalibur is not a gay bar, but the gay bars happen to be a lot of fun....
