What is the best Chicago suburb to live in? |
Travel Info For a couple in their late 20s moving from Florida. Travel Tips I know many people that have moved out of the city and move north. I lived in a town called Poplar Grove or Belvidere. It is an hour away from Chi. but it is cheaper and you can jump right on 90 to get to the city. The people and the area is great. Others NAPERVILLE voted (somewhere in top 10) in Unites States. I live in Blue Island. Super cheap, excellent transit (buses, trains to city) easy shopping, a lot of Hispanics. (bars every10 feet) It depends on what you want. Do you plan on going into the city often? If so, then you'll want to pick one that borders the city. Do you want a more "rural" feel, with less population density and traffic? Then pick one as far away from the city as possible. Naperville (far west suburb) has consistently received awards for being one of the best cities to live in in America. Another question to ask yourself is this: how much can you afford to spend on rent/housing? Some suburbs have a reputation for catering to the extremely wealthy (particularly if you want to live on or near Lake Michigan). There's no easy answer to this... Chicago is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the USA. There's something for just about everyone. The best suburb for you is a combination of: One that is near your work or public transportation. One that you can afford. One that has good resale value, if you are buying. One that is near the highway system if you like to get out of town often. One that has lake michigan water. All that being said, I am partial to the Northwest Suburbs. I am not a Naperville fan contrary to all the good pub it gets. Their infrastructure is miserable as is traffic (but Naperville does not have a monopoly on bad traffic...it's everywhere) That depends what you're looking for in terms of proximity to the city, things to do, and your commute. My personal opinion is that, on the north side, Evanston, on the west side, Oak Park, and on the south side, Homewood/Flossmoor, are the best for young people. You'll hear a lot about Naperville, on the far west section of Chicago. It's a nice city and has a lot of the similar restaurants to Chicago, with easy train access. The traffic in Naperville can be bad, though, and it really is quite far from the city of Chicago. I'm a fan of Oak Park, which has CTA service, is walkable and has quite a bit of noteworthy history and culture. It's great for raising a family, if you plan to do that. Even if you don't, it's a great town. But really, "I know for sure" has the right idea. You should give him best answer and make your decision based off his suggestions. :) Good luck! I want to say Naperville, but the traffic problem keeps me from it. Traffic is very bad in Naperville as it has witnessed tremendous growth in population in the last decade. The City of Naperville could not keep up with expanding the roads. Even commute to-from Naperville is hectic. I am hoping it would get better when the current widening of I-88 is completed. But if you can find a way around traffic, Naperville is hands down the best place to live. It is a very safe city, plenty restaurants, shopping, nice downtown, riverwalk and if you are planning on it - great schools & public library. |
