How safe is the area just east of Western & Washington? |
Travel Info I'm moving to Chicago soon, and doing apartment shopping. I understand this area is "in transition" so there's opportunity to get the most bang for the buck in apartments in the neighborhood (Westhaven Park). Is the area reasonably safe? As long as theres nothing like corner prostitution and drive by shootings, i think i'll keep the area in mind. Travel Tips "In transition" pretty much hits it on the head. It's not too far from the United Center (where the Bulls and Blackhawks play). I drove by there last weekend and was amazed by the number of condos and loft type buildings that have sprung up around there. But then you can walk one block over and it gets a little skeevy (my word). I haven't been there at night so I can't tell you about that, but I would think that people wouldn't spend that kind of money on condos if they didn't think it was worth their investment. Not sure what to tell you other than make a trip to the city first, visit the area (during the day and night) and see for yourself. Also plan on visiting other parts of the city you might have in mind. you might also want to look at the area around Greektown (halsted and Jackson). It's up and coming as well and you might still get a good deal. In fact there are lots of areas in Chicago that are seeing a boom in new housing. Others it varies not all crime is gang related I'd hesitate to buy there. It's not a place where you want to walk around by yourself at night. The area from Western and going East all the way to the loop is definitely in transition. The Western/Madison and Western/Washington area even has Starbucks investing so it's on the way. I suspect within the next few years the renovations will continue to spread Westward to the Garfield Park area. |
