The Bean in Millenium Park Chicago?

Travel Info
I think it is so damn ugly! Anyone else from Chicago or ever visited Chicago agree?

Travel Tips
I am a lifelong Chicagoan but lived in the Milwaukee area for about a year. That was the year they built Millennium Park. I didn't get the memo!

I thought (until I read your question) that I was the only person who didn't "get" the bean and the whole Millennium Park thing. I mean, I fully realize I wasn't here when it was built and promoted, but I came back to Chicago and NOBODY had mentioned it and I drove past it and was like, WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED HERE?! Weird giant faces? A giant bean? Has the whole town gone mad?!

It freaked me out. Of course, now that I've been to it a few more times, I really like it but I still don't really "get" it...like why...why did we do this? What does it mean? Why a bean?! Why a bean right there? Who are the faces and what is the purpose?

I'm having friends in from New Mexico in July and I can't wait to take them there and see what they think...they haven't been here since before Millennium Park and I can't wait to find out what they think!

You can never say we're a dull city, that's for sure! I LOVE Mayor Daley! He's done so much for our toddlin' town!

It is a highly reflective work of art.

Are you sure you weren't looking at yourself?
Shane - I live in Chicago and I think The Bean (actually the Cloud Gate sculpture by Anish Kapoor) is very interesting.

I work near Millennium Park and all of my company's out of town visitors ALWAYS visit The Bean and Millennium Park when they're in town.
Haha, im from chicago originally and i dont think ive ever understood the bean myself. i wouldnt consider it ugly, but definitly weird! although it is a must see everytime i go with someone who has never been. hah!
its nice i think,
kids really enjoy it.
maybe youll like it in time?
dont force yourself to like it,
its weird to some, then again, you may like it later.
Sorry...you're over ruled. Go back again and don't look for an explanation. Watch the reaction of others. Get in it.

The only thing I didn't like was the smudges on the surface. Maybe you should take some fantastik and paper towels to it and scrub away.
I don't like or hate The Bean. What I hate is the money they spent for it and the cost overruns of the entire park itself. There are pot holes in various parts of the city that have been there for YEARS, rundown and underdeveloped neighborhoods that should have been take care of LONG ago. But here we are building a giant nesting place for A BEAN. And the park was supposed to be build solely on private funding, but we now know that was a big fat lie. So, while The Bean may be interesting, what it cost the city to get it done is the ugly part.
